On March 26, 2018 the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan deposited its instrument of accession to the Madrid Protocol, making Afghanistan the 101st member of the Madrid System. The Protocol will enter into force for Afghanistan on June 26, 2018.

According to the report, global filings of patents, trademarks and industrial designs reached record levels in 2016, with demand in China driving growth. Intellectual property filing activity grew by 8.3% for patents, 16.4% for trademarks, and 10.4% for industrial designs in 2016.
