Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an amendment to a federal law reserving the use of the Russian term for champagne – Шампанское (shampanskoye) – to sparkling wines produced in Russia.Putin’s move has caused a stir with French producers, as it will require them to use the generic term “sparkling wine” on the back of their bottles sold in Russia.“Sovietskoïé shampanskoye” is the Russian word established under Stalin rule in the 1920s that describes a cheap and low quality sparkling wine available in Russia. Its production method is different from the one used in France.

MOSCOW, May 19 (RAPSI) — Google LLC has filed a lawsuit against Intra Service Company seeking the early termination of its trademark due to the the failure to use it, according to Russia’s Intellectual Property Court (IP Court). The American company seeks termination of “Intra services company” trademark, in which the last two words are unprotected elements, in relation to the services including advertising and business management, as well as scientific and technological services.

The Federal Service for Intellectual Property of Russia (ROSPATENT) has implemented an amended version of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation, which entered into force as of January 17, 2021. The alterations, initially signed and published on July 20, 2020, concern the main types of IP protection inclusive of patent, utility model, trademark and industrial design rights, and introduce the allowance of 3-Dimensional models in applications for the aforementioned IP types.

A draft law amending part four of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation “on geographical indications” was passed by the State Duma of the Russian Federation on 26 July 2019 and comes into effect on 27 July 2020. For the first time, it enables protection of GIs in Russia. It was also the first time in many years that a new right has been added to Russian IP law.
