Disney and Universal are suing AI photo generation company Midjourney, marking the first major legal showdown between Hollywood studios and an artificial intelligence company.
USPTO has announced an added option for Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) customers to file a petition for cancellation in our new system, TTAB Center. The new filing functionality will be available on May 12, 2025. Currently, petitioners can file using either TTAB Center or the existing filing platform, the Electronic System for Trademark Trials and Appeals (ESTTA). Starting on July 12, 2025, users will no longer be able to file petitions for cancellation through ESTTA. A cancellation proceeding is a TTAB proceeding in which a party may seek to cancel an active trademark registration.

US authorities say Tesla’s proposed naming strategy for its autonomous EVs is too generic. The US Patent and Trademark Office has refused Tesla’s attempt to trademark the name Robotaxi for the self-driving vehicle behind its promised autonomous ride-hailing service. The EV maker owned by Elon Musk has already aborted an attempt to trademark the name Cybercab for the vehicle it revealed last October, on the basis that other companies are also pursuing similar ‘cyber’ based trademarks.

However, if you are an IP attorney, thoughts of sun, sand and cocktails may now be replaced by the Bahamian Intellectual Property Office’s (BIPO) recently enacted changes to their Trademark Act. BIPO’s changes to its IP laws were announced February 25, 2025, but were effective retroactively as of February 1st. The good news is that these changes bring Bahamian trademark law closer to those of international standards.
